Are your link building efforts outdated?

Last week we mentioned how to use keyword research organically. While it may seem elementary to some, the reality is Google’s algorithm has changed in the past couple years, forcing some brands to think twice about the way they are using (and sometimes abusing) SEO elements like keywords. (If this is you, be sure to check out the post so you know where you can safely use keywords on your site.)

Today we’re going to dig into link building, or outreach, as it’s often referred to in 2013. Even if you haven’t purchased links for your site, there’s a pretty good chance your old methods are quickly fading into oblivion. So let’s look at a brief overview of which tactics are losing their relevancy and what you can do to get back into the game. Continue reading →

Link building talk at #DFWSEM

Hola! This is Emily and I’m trying my best to live(ish)-blog the State of Search conference in Dallas. Unfortunately I missed Chris Brogan’s opening talk, but was just in time for one of my favorite SEO celebs.

Wil Reynolds at State of Search

Wil Reynolds of SEER gave an inspiring talk about link building at State of Search. The great thing about Wil is that he’s incredibly genuine in his SEO efforts – much like we are – so we can always pull some great insight from his time on the stage. The title of Wil’s talk was Real Company Shit, which in itself indicates Wil’s passion for transforming the reputations of SEOs. Continue reading →

Back to the drawing board

Who here is sick of the phrase “content is king?” Yeah. Me too. I’m bloody tired of it. I’m even getting bored with the word “content.” What does it mean anymore? According to dictionary.com, it means:

  1. something that is contained (brilliant, guys)
  2. something that is to be expressed through some medium
  3. significance or profundity; meaning
  4. substantive information or creative material viewed in contrast to its actual or potential manner of presentation
  5. that which may be perceived in something

Hm. Overall, those definitions are pretty vague, but perhaps we can work with them. Of these five, “d” is probably what most of us in the SEO biz have in mind when talking about content.

The way I see it, content can be marvelous. Or it can be a pathetic train wreck. Content is not king. Content only earns its royal crown when it can serve a specific purpose in a superb way. Continue reading →

Link Building 101

We talk a lot about developing a content strategy for your website. The idea is to transform your digital space into an informational hub from which visitors gain instant value. Content strategy often remains on-site, meaning the content resides within your dot-com. Sometimes your brand will contribute content to sites other than your own, in the form of guest blogging. This is a link building tactic.

1) What is Link Building?

To put it simply, it is the act of proactively seeking referrals to your website from another in the form of links.

2) Why is link building important?

Link building is the single most critical factor when it comes to ranking. Keywords are important, too, but the search engine algorithms have been modified to place a higher emphasis on links. Continue reading →
